Alt-week 8.25.12: robotic noses, Nodosaurs and Space X launches again

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days. All good things come to and end, they say. Thankfully, most bad things do, too. So while the rest of the world of tech is dealing with the fallout, and possible implications of patent law, over here in the wild party that is Alt, we're fist pumping at all the awesome weekly sci-tech fodder. For example, we've got a robo-nose that can sniff out nasties in the air, a 110-million-year-old footprint found in NASA's back yard, and not one, but two space stories to reflect on.

Majority of smartphone users rarely exceed 2GB of data every month, according to recent survey

There was quite a bit of fuss kicked up when carriers started to end unlimited data plans as this meant that users who used a lot of data had to pay for overages. Usually this resulted in highly expensive bills as charges for over-the-limit data can be quite expensive. That being said, a recent survey conducted by NPD has revealed that a vast majority of smartphone users rarely exceeded 2GB of data usage per month, and at the same time discovering that amongst all the carriers, T-Mobile users were considered to be the most "data hungry" with 11% of its subscribers using more than 3GB a month.

South Korean court rules Apple infringed on two Samsung patents, fines it $35k; Samsung gets hit too

We have yet another twist in the worldwide patent battle between electronics giants Apple and Samsung, as the Wall Street Journal and Reutersreport a Seoul court has ruled in favor of the latter when it came to two patents in a case on its home turf. While it decided that Apple had infringed on two Samsung patents, it also found that Samsung had returned the favor on Apple's "bounceback" design patent, but not on another regarding icon design resulting in damages of about $22,000 Samsung.

Despite what some media outlets are saying, the long list of questions and answers about the Fisker Karma now floating around (and available below) is not a leaked document. Instead, it is part of Fisker's ongoing customer service operations, Roger Ormisher, Fisker's head PR director, told AutoblogGreen. The Q&A is the result of Fisker's ongoing town hall meetings it holds via telephone with customers, where "we discuss everything that's going on with the car." The questions are collected, answers written down and then the list is sent out to all Karma owners, he said.

While creating hipster-like photos with Instagram might not be for everyone, there are some people out there who follow Instagram feeds as some would with Facebook or Twitter feeds. If you're such a person or if you know someone like that, then the Instacube could make the perfect gift. Boiling it down to its essence, the Instacube is basically a digital photo frame, although the main difference is that instead of streaming photos from a plugged in memory card, it will instead display photos from Instagram, allowing users to view a stream of photos from any feed on Instagram or follow a particular hashtag.

The 2013 Infiniti JX just went on sale this summer, but it's already experiencing some growing pains. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall for the all-new JX today for an issue that could leave drivers stranded. This recall, which begins on September 4, affects early JX models built between February 15 and June 22. That amounts to 7,842 units – through July, Infiniti has sold 9,724 JX models in total.
Infiniti's new luxury three-row crossover is being recalled due to a problem with a fuel line that can block the fuel level float that could yield an incorrect reading on the fuel gauge.

You know Sennheiser's pissed when it holds a press conference just to talk about its anti-counterfeit efforts. The friction between Volkswagen and Proton continues, but this time it's coming from Germany, not Malaysia. The two firms have talked about some sort of partnership, or VW buying Proton outright, intermittently going back to 2005. In 2007 a partnership was nixed after a year of talks, then in 2010 after more talks a partnership was nixed again. The landscape has changed since then, with Malaysian firm DRB-Hicom taking control Proton and buying out the Malaysian government's stake.

It was only hours ago when Nikon officially unveiled the Coolpix S800c, but we've already laid our hands on this eccentric device. As you've probably already heard, the main selling point here is that said "smart camera" is powered by a slick (and near-vanilla) Android 2.3.3 with Google services, so with the built-in WiFi, you can upload your 16-megapixel images or 1080p videos straight to your various social networks or other cloud services. Or you can, if you're in the mood, just play Angry Birds on the S800c, but that 1,050mAh battery might not be ideal for prolonged entertainment.
