Facebook working on 'save-for-later' feature, lets you like things privately

Facebook working on 'save-for-later' feature, lets you like things privately

Ever wanted to flag a Facebook post for the future - one you wouldn't want to be seen "liking" in the present. Well, the heads at Palo Alto are testing a way to make that happen: a save-for-later feature that'll allow you to add posts to a private feed. Saving is conducted on the sly, so you can create a slimmed-down stalking experience without alerting the posters. If you're prone to using the desktop version of the site, the option should appear alongside the familiar "Like", "Comment" and "Share" soon. A similar change should be available on the mobile site, with a press-and-hold mechanic doing the job in the apps for iDevices.

Google postponing Nexus Q launch to 'make it better,' sending a free device to those who pre-ordered

Apparently Google's strange little media streamer isn't quite ready for prime time - not according to the company that made it, at least. The software giant has begun sending out a note to pre-orderers letting them know that the launch of the sphere has been delayed in order to "work on making it even better." The company adds that it's responding to user feedback from previewers who want it to "do even more than it does today." To show that there are no hard feelings, the company will be "extend[ing] [the] Nexus Q preview to our pre-order customers and send[ing] [them] a free device," according to Google.

Overall, the Nexus 7 scored a 79 out of 100 and did particularly well in Consumer Reports's ratings for both touch response and portability.

Apple given patent for predictive text input user interface

Apple given patent for predictive text input user interface

Apple was granted yet another armament in their massive arsenal of U.S. patents, where the graphical user interface that currently sees action in iOS will have its “hit region” which is roughly the size of a virtual keyboard's buttons, and is based on predictive text data. After all, this particular patent is more or less an elegant solution to the issue of entering text on a mobile device's relatively small display. Apple's U.S. Patent No.

Huawei Ascend G 302D goes public in FCC docs

It's a curious thing to have gold signify the low-end, but that's just what Huawei's done with its G series smartphone line. That bottom-dwelling, budget tier, first announced at this past Mobile World Congress, has already seen a couple of category cousins come out into the open (see: Vodafone's G 300 and T-Mobile's G 312), so color us unsurprised to find yet another single-core, Googlefied device crop up at the FCC. The associated docs leave little to the imagination, treating us to unobstructed images of the Ascend G 302D - presumably, a 4-incher.

Cabbie converts London taxi into Olympic hotel

Cabbie converts London taxi into Olympic hotel

We don't know what kind of person would want to be traveling in London right now. With the Olympics in town, the city has become besieged with tourists, athletes and officials. The price of hotel rooms have skyrocketed, and the presence of Olympic-only bus lanes have locked up everyone else, who must share the road. The length of a cab ride has jumped tremendously.
It must be a maddening experience, but one London taxi driver has found a solution that benefits both he and at least one tourist per night. David Weekes has turned his taxi into a hotel room, and for $75 a night one guest can stay in the back seat of his London Taxi TX4.

Interestingly enough, it looks like one rumored release date for T-Mobile's Samsung Galaxy Note was true after all. The magenta carrier just announced that the phone / tablet hybrid device (let's just call it a phablet) will become available on August 8. It's not cheap, though. You'll need to pony up no less than $249.99 for the privilege of getting a phablet that will only be ‘current' for a couple of months tops – since its successor, the Galaxy Note 2, is expected to be unveiled next month. Furthermore, that price is after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Of course, TMo also has the ‘value' plans.

EA believes that the freemium model is the future

If you have been gaming for a while now, you've probably noticed that games have started adopting the freemium model. In case you're wondering what that is, the freemium model is where games are free to play, but players will instead pay the developer by buying in-game items or perks using real money. This could potentially lead to the developer earning more than they would if they had sold the game at a fixed price, but this model is also one that might not sit well with gamers who'd rather pay a flat fee and be granted access to everything. EA on the other hand seems to think that the freemium model is the future.

Apple secures multitouch-related patent dating back to 1995 from inventor

Apple has come into possession of a number of patents owned by Canadian inventor Timothy R. Pryor in recent years (see the More Coverage link below for a few examples), and it's just today been granted another that's particularly interesting. Described rather broadly as a "method for providing human input to a computer," the patent (filed in July of 2009) is a continuation of one dating all the way back to 1995, and appears to cover some fairly basic multitouch-related functions.

Box shares the app love with Windows Phone, hopes SkyDrive doesn't get special treatment

Up until now, Box.net (otherwise simply known as Box) had been quietly snubbing the Windows Phone platform altogether, but today's the day the cloud service finally ports its storage and sharing goods to Redmond's mobile OS. As far as the app goes, Box is keeping things relatively simple - much like on iOS and Android - but adding a few tweaks to fit nicely alongside that Metro UI, including tidbits like pinning tiles to the Start screen for viewing updates on files. DJ Shadow – first artist to get paid by BitTorrent

While BitTorrent usually isn't synonymous with legitimate music downloads, it looks like things are about to change. According to reports online, BitTorrent is now being used to distribute original music starting with a turntablist known as DJ Shadow. Every time someone downloads a free torrent of his tracks and installs the bundled software, he and the developer of the software will earn some revenue. Details of the revenue sharing weren't released, but this legitimate way of distributing music could be the first of many deals BitTorrent makes with artists in the music industry.

Whatever the justification for its existence, this M135i three-door hatch is as close to outrageously fantastic as the recently decommissioned 1M Coupe.
