Instagram for Android signup page goes live ahead of imminent release

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom previously confirmed that an Android version of the company's popular iOS application was in the works, even claiming that “in some ways its better than our iPhone app.” On Saturday, the company launched a teaser page, allowing users to sign up to become “first in line for Instagram for Android.” The release date for Instagram's Android app is still unknown, however. As an iOS exclusive, Instagram has already racked up more than 27 million registered users, making it one of the App Store's most popular photography apps.

Ever since it launched, the iPhone has been available to AT&T customers. However, though elsewhere in the world the iPhone unlocked can run on multiple carriers, those with iPhones from AT&T don't enjoy the same luxury. As a result of the AT&T lock, their phones can't be used on other networks that use the same bands, even though there is no other fully compatible 3G network in the U.S. However, that may change.

A few days ago, we reported that Apple is locking horns with other companies, primarily Nokia, regarding the design of the nano-SIM, the next generation of the SIM design that will be dramatically smaller than even the current micro-SIM.
